The Swedish lyrics this English song text is based on were written by Arvid Rosén and first published in a songbook in 1928 as "Natten går tunga fjät". The content differs significantly from the original Italian version and has been heavily adapted to suit Swedish Lucia celebrations and traditions. Therefore, this English version may seem very strange to people who are not familiar with the Swedish Lucia celebrations on 13 December.
