William Alexander Leidesdorff, born in 1810 in the Virgin Islands, is considered one of the earliest Black millionaires in the United States. He was of mixed race, with a Danish father and an African-Caribbean mother. Leidesdorff moved to San Francisco in the 1840s, where he became a prominent businessman and a significant figure in the city's development. He engaged in various enterprises, including shipping, real estate, and commerce, and was one of the first to construct a hotel in the burgeoning city. Leidesdorff also served as the U.S. Vice Consul to Mexico, highlighting his importance and influence during his time.
