Wismar Massacre in 1964 targeted Indians in Guyana - the majority being Hindu

Hindu Lifestyle September 6, 2024
Wismar was a bauxite mining community situated by the Demerara River about 90 kms south of the capital of Georgetown (now Linden, Guyana). Over a four-day period in May 1964, racial violence erupted as Africans drove Indians out of the area with multiple counts of arson, beatings, rapes and murders. Practically all 3,000 Indians – men, women and children – were forced to flee for their lives to Georgetown, carrying whatever meagre possessions they were able to grab. The impact of this on the psyche of Indo-Guyanese - - the vast majority being Hindu - - has never been documented. Stories told from elders are all we have. It's important however that we speak about atrocities committed against our community. I only learned about the Wismar Massacre a few years ago.
